A Real Piece of Work by Chris Orcutt, An Intelligent and Engaging Mystery

You can tell from the naming of his main characters - Dakota Stevens and Svetlana Krüsh - that author Chris Orcutt has a sense of humour, and this is apparent throughout his writing. This book is no comedy - far from it - but Orcutt displays a lightness of touch in dealing with his characters that makes it a joy to read.

The story focuses around Dakota - ex FBI agent now turned PI - and his `beautiful assistant' chess world champion Svetlana. They are offered a job to find a missing painting - and paid a substantial amount in advance. When their client goes missing, they have the option of taking the money and doing nothing. But that is not Dakota's style - and as he begins to investigate what seems like a simple art theft, the plot genuinely does thicken. Dakota and Svetlana piece by piece uncover a much greater crime dating back to decades earlier.

This is an extremely well written novel. It has all the elements you would want to find in a book of this genre: plenty of fast action, beautiful women, secret wealth and bravery beyond measure. But add in a couple of extra ingredients and you have a real winner. The extra ingredients? The quality of the writing. The book moves at a pace, and it's a consistent pace. It never flags. But the ingredient that makes this a winner for me is definitely Orcutt's wit. He paints the Dakota Stevens character so well that you cannot fail to like him.

Like another reviewer, I would love to understand his relationship with Svetlana. As a man who seems to jump on every available woman at every opportunity, it remains a mystery why the gorgeous Svetlana seems to be excluded from his attentions (although he makes several comments that would suggest there is no lack of interest on his part). And I did find it slightly difficult to keep up to speed with all of the characters - particularly early on in the book. But I have concluded that this is a failing on my part. Possibly reading this book into the early hours of the morning didn't help my memory!

Some reviewers have commented that this book would make an excellent film. I disagree. I think it has TV series written all over it. An excellent novel that is well worth reading. I'm seriously looking forward to the next in this series.

Welcome to the final day of The Kindle Book Reviewer's choice series. If you haven't been paying attention, we have posted seven of our reviewers favorite books of 2011. These books have ranged from fantasy to romance to thriller to hauntings. Today we are featuring one of our in house reviewers and writers, Rebecca Scarberry.

Today's featured book only has one review, but I checked out his other books, and there are many, award winning in fact, and all he gets is 5 stars... on all his titles. Because this is the reviewer's choice, the author gets a free pass on the 20 review rule.

I highly recommend this novel to those of you who like novels with plenty of adventure and a storyline you will not soon forget.

The first death in this story is the death of Peter Welsh after he rents an apartment to Sarah Townsend. Sarah is nowhere to be found for questioning. This is where author, John Scherber, takes you on a wild ride with the Wahkonen, also called shape shifters, a mystical mist, where fetuses are found in corn husks among other unexplained deaths.

The Wahkonen certainly had no hesitation to kill, even for the most frivolous of reasons. The mist can be seen when a Wahkonen is moving and thus changing shape. The mimicry is both physical and psychological. Normal human motivations do not apply to them.

It takes a village to track down the Wahkonen. It must be killed and the only way to do this is by driving a sharp buckthorn stake into its heart and then spraying it with water.

What I like the most about the story was the masterful way John Scherber takes you through a treacherous mountain excursion. As the people, in search of a Wahkonen, drive through the mountains, you feel as though you can see every frightening detail. There are sheer drop-offs, sharp curves, and when they reach the top they are in the clouds.

John has you constantly wondering whose body the Wahkonen has taken over. Just when I thought I had that figured out, things changed.

I will definitely read more books by John Scherber.

Blake's Fatal Exchange had me hooked from the first chapter. It is a fast paced, action packed thriller that you won't want to put down.

It begins with a watch dealer who sells a million dollars worth of watches to an Asian businessman. When it turns out the bills are counterfeit the game is on. The counterfeiters realize some less than perfect bills are out and they want them back before anyone knows they exist.
Tess, a bicycle courier, is the daughter of the watch dealer and when the bodies start stacking up she realizes she's probably next.

Throw in a serial killer that is targeting female bike messengers and you have one more twist in the plot.
Blake ties the plots together brilliantly in a turn you won't see coming.

A decent plot, excellent background into the Chinese drug culture and gangs, plus an outstanding court case in the last 30 pages of the book brings this book to a very satisfying conclusion that had me turning pages to see how it ends.

Neon Dragon features Michael Knight, a lawyer working for a Boston law firm, who finds himself responsible for representing a young Harvard student who is accused of murdering a respected older Chinese man in the Boston Chinatown district. The defendant also happens to be the son of a judge who is in line to become the next chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court.

I would rate Neon Dragon 4.3 stars - if I could. It is not a 5 star book, but better than 4 stars and is a fast read for those who like a Grisham style legal thriller (moderate character development, a good story, fast paced, less than 350 pages, and a better ending than most Grisham books).

If this is the style of book you love to read, then Neon Dragon by John F. Dobbyn should be on your reading list.

Set in the real world with the addition of fairy tale creatures. It all starts as a seemingly normal romance story, but then will escalate into a fantasy with Knights in shining armour and an evil sorceress, plus magic and myths. This is a wonderful story that is easy to read and it's a page turner.

Mina Singer is a typical teenager, she is in love with a boy and they have been together for two years. Everything is going to plan until one day a new student arrives at college. Blake is the most handsome boy she has ever seen and is instantly in love with him. Mina has guilty feelings about falling out of love with Sam, she continues to feel and see Blake without anyone knowing. Blake is old school and will not kiss or touch Mina until she has ended things with Sam; this makes him even more honourable in Mina's eyes.

On one eventful evening, Blake was giving Mina a lift home and it was pouring with rain. The traffic was horrible and Blake decided to take another route. His car stalled and wouldn't start because of all the water, so they had to walk to get mobile phone signal. While walking in the forest, Blake was summoned the Morgan, the evil sorceress and asked to go on an adventure to recover a lost relic. Mina couldn't believe her eyes and this was the beginning of her adventure.

I loved this book, the story was easy to follow and the characters weren't complicated. I loved the mix of romance and adventure. I can't wait to read the next in this trilogy, Immortal Beloved (book 2 Knight Trilogy). ~ Katie Turner (The Kindle Book Review) Get a copy of Forest of Adventures NOW.

I am very glad that this will be a 4 book series. The first book in the series introduces us to Kendra. Kendra is a 17 year old ondine, a descendent from Dessondines, water creatures.

Kendra was living in the human world, when things go wrong, she is taken to the ondine community of Harverleau, where she can learn to harness her abilities and her destiny. Kendra is accustomed to starting a new school, as she had to move around a lot, so this one was no different. With all schools there is a hierarchy and Kendra quickly works out where she is in the order. Kendra makes friends quickly, but enemies even quicker.

Kendra is attractive, she draws a lot of attention because of her beauty, but also because she is the prophesised saviour to her kind. Kendra doesn't want to believe she is this ONE, but none the less, has to face the music and accept her responsibilities. Kendra causes trouble wherever she goes and doesn't like being taken care of. She believes she can take care of herself without anybodies help. One of her protectors is Tristan, Kendra can't seem to keep her mind out of the gutter when he is around her. Then there is Ryder and Julian and a whole lot of other boys that just can`t help but want her.

This book has non-stop action, love and an amazing world that has never been seen before. The issues that Kendra has to face are quite realistic in terms of teenage angst and rebellion, excluding the special abilities of course. I absolutely loved this book and was blubbering at the end. Picking up the story six months after the conclusions of the first book, Umstead instills in you a false sense of security and normalcy so that he can leverage his plot and jerk the rug out from under you and his characters. This book is loaded with more than enough hi-tech action but Umstead finds balance and depth by presenting a more complex plot and delves much deeper into his characters.

Against all odds - a summary

Evan Gabriel and his team of special operations forces have been cleaning up the streets of Mars. Gone are the criminals and the chaos, replaced by the pleasant smiles of pedestrians and laughter of children playing. Things are winding down for Gabriel and his crack unit but political forces are manipulating events around the galaxies that will put it all in jeopardy.

Learning that one of his men from the ill-fated Eden mission is alive but imprisoned, Gabriel takes his team back to where his nightmare began. As they prepare for this latest Eden mission, one team member falls to a traitor's plot and they quickly realize the only people they can trust are each other. Ill-equipped and undermanned, Gabriel and his crew must fight their way through enemy territory and defeat an army of terrorists in order to eliminate the mysterious `Prophet' and rescue their hostages.

Meanwhile, political machinations begin to play out as an anonymous mastermind, backed by the La Republica de Sudamerica, begins his coup on Mars while Gabriel and his team are light years away battling the terrorists and their own personal demons.

Final Thoughts

While there were no major surprises in the story, there was more than enough action and intrigue to keep me turning page after suspenseful. In fact I enjoyed this book as much, if not more than the first novel for a couple of reasons. First, we get a much better picture about the kind of man Evan Gabriel really is because he's no longer a one-man show on the run. Second, the mix between action and intrigue was much more balanced and definitely sews enough threads to make me excited about reading Gabriel's Revenge (Book 3). Add it all together and you have a five-star read in Gabriel's Return.

This is a beautiful heart warming story, you know that love is going to blossom - you just don't know how it's going to end.

I don't think I've ever read a Western Romance before so I wasn't really sure what to expect, I feel that it was perfectly set and the scenes, smells and sounds were so vivid that I felt that I sat in the midst of it. I found that the more I read, the more I bonded with not only the main characters but all of the characters, even down to the ranch hands and I became used to "seeing" them as I read each page - I think I'll quite miss them now that I've finished.

The storyline flows well and the book gets off to quite a dramatic start, it's a fast paced book and has just the right balance of cowboys, horses and love!! I found myself laughing, smiling and crying as I was reading, the way the author wrote this captures your emotions and sweeps you along as you are reading.

I'm heading off to find the next part of the McCutcheon series - I'm looking forward to reading it.

What a FANTASTIC read!
Monk Mendell is asked by Father Ramsey to counsel a prisoner waiting to be hanged. The prisoner, an ex-pirate who uses information he has gained to lead active pirates to vulnerable targets, has not spoken to any of the clergy sent before Mendell. It is a common belief in this society that everyone should be given a chance to repent and/or reconcile their lives before death and as a monk whose chosen god out of several deities is Lord Justice, he is not happy with this new directive. After all, justice has been done and the punishment for all pirates is death.

Although not indifferent to the prisoner, Mendell does not encourage him to repent but listens to him instead. Giving the prisoner a choice of what he wants to speak about in his last hours causes the pirate to open up.

What Mendell witnesses and hears causes him to question whether the pirate deserves death as his sentence and whether the military is using unethical practices in order to solve the crime problem.

What follows is a mixture of adventure, fantasy and mystery.

I loved the mash-up of genres in this story. Elements of a good old fashioned crime mystery mixed with an epic fantasy environment and a touch of magic. The person of Monk Mendell became one of my favorite characters of all time. An honest and strong man, compassionate and just with a likable personality that caused me to hang on his every word.

Becoming caught up in a doomed mission while trying to understand the facts, he still offers hope and healing to those around them. Giving all involved the benefit of the doubt while seeking guidance from Father Ramsey and the gods.

This is a story about a gentle hero and his quest to bring justice where justice is due as well as mercy to those who need it. While discovering himself and his mission, he realizes that all is not what it seems and the lines between good and evil are blurred.

I recommend this book to all lovers of fiction. I truly hope I will get to follow Monk Mendell on the rest of his journey.

What you will find are books that are getting great reviews. The authors we post are lesser known, but they're hungry for success. Here are a few that you might enjoy. This list is mostly supernatural thrillers, but as always, we try to post a variety of genres from romance to humor to horror. We highlight any genre that meets our stringent requirements. Please support these authors, load up your Kindle, and have a great Holiday.

Nephelim: Genesis of Evil by Renee Pawlish has 32 reviews and is holding a solid 4.8 stars! I'm reading this one at the moment and loving it. Expect a 5-star review from me. Nephelim is a supernatural thriller where a dark power described in Genesis revisits a small mountain town. A journalist who witnessed an evil presence searches for answers and finds the town succumbing to supernatural forces. In his search, an evil prophesy may be fulfilled by the Nephilim. Nehelim: Genesis of Evil is free at the moment, and normally 99¢, so this is a great read for the money either way.

Drummer Boy, the second book in The Sheriff Littlfield Series by Scott Nicholson is another great read with 37 reviews and a 4.7-star rating. Scott is one of my favorite supernatural/suspense authors. He converted me with his occult thriller, The Red Church and I've been a fan ever since. Currently, book two of his FEAR Series is on my to-read list, but you should start with Drummer Boy. A master at bringing the supernatural to the Appalachia, this intesnse story about a young boy who protects a small town from evil is a real winner. Get Drummer Boy now and feel the power of Nicholson's pen.

Hearts in Darkness by Laura Kaye is a steamy romance with a whopping 77 reviews, and is carrying a very tasty 4.7-star rating. Makenna James thinks her day can't get any worse, until she finds herself stuck in a pitch-black elevator with a complete stranger. Distracted by a phone call and juggling too much stuff, the pin-striped accountant caught only a glimpse of a dragon tattoo on his hand before the lights went out... The rest is history. Hearts in Darkness will surely please and romance reader.

Montana Dawn by Caroline Fyffe is another romance earning a top score of 26 reviews with a 4.4-star average. MONTANA DAWN is book one in The McCutcheon Family Series, 2010 Maggie Finalist, 2010 Gayle Wilson Finalist, and a RWA Golden Heart Finalist. If you're looking for a historical romance dated in the late 1800s, you'll want to read Montana Dawn.

"Tom Gray is a husband, father, ex serviceman and now business man, living a happy life. That is till the day a lowlife serial car thief runs from the police, leaving his stolen car rolling down the road...into Daniel Gray, his son. With his family utterly destroyed, and the offender getting away scot-free and returning to offending without a care in the world, Gray straps on his guns, calls his buddies and decides that today is the day the government will finally sit up and smell society.

I utterly loved this book. Think Law Abiding Citizen and you have just scratched the surface. Gray Justice has lots of twists, breathtaking description and is gritty, harsh and brutal in places. This book is a must read. Another great plus for me is that it is set in the UK!

I can totally see this book making it as a film. Can I suggest Ross Kemp and Gerard Butler for parts? I did not see the cliff hanger at the end coming, which is a lovely surprise when you read as much as I do. I am drooling for the next installment."

Friend Request, by William Andrews is one of those hidden gems buried among the many psychological thrillers and Michael Prescott fans are eating it up. I read through William's twenty, five-star reviews and I was astounded at the remarks. Many of the reviewers were pleasantly surprised and pulled in from the first page.

Although this is William Andrew's rookie novel, he does not disappoint.

"What an adventure! This is a wonderful adventure story for young adults. Set in the real world with the addition of fairy tale creatures. It all starts as a seemingly normal romance story, but then will escalate into a fantasy with Knights in shining armour and an evil sorceress, plus magic and myths. This is a wonderful story that is easy to read and it’s a page turner.

Mina Singer is a typical teenager, she is in love with a boy and they have been together for two years. Everything is going to plan until one day a new student arrives at college. Blake is the most handsome boy she has ever seen and is instantly in love with him. Mina has guilty feelings about falling out of love with Sam, she continues to feel and see Blake without anyone knowing. Blake is old school and will not kiss or touch Mina until she has ended things with Sam; this makes him even more honourable in Mina's eyes.

On one eventful evening, Blake was giving Mina a lift home and it was pouring with rain. The traffic was horrible and Blake decided to take another route. His car stalled and wouldn't start because of all the water, so they had to walk to get mobile phone signal. While walking in the forest, Blake was summoned the Morgan, the evil sorceress and asked to go on an adventure to recover a lost relic. Mina couldn't believe her eyes and this was the beginning of her adventure.

It follows the Commander, an orphaned woman who joins the military to take revenge on those who killed her Father. While she is defending her country, the Commander goes for weapons only to find a Giant in the holding cells. She offers him a deal; if he helps win the battle, she will allow him to be free. The Den Asaan Rautu accepts her offer and helps her defend and win the battle. He then accepts her offer to stay and help defend her country from the war.

When the war is over, Rautu wanted to return to his home. The Commander was invited to return with him as well. On their journey they become engrossed in each other. Not wanting to be apart from each other's company. The Den Asaan Rautu is aggressive & stubborn, but on the inside is truly capable of love.

The characters and world that is created is amazing to say the least. Fantasy seems to be a small word for what this book offers. The book offers non stop action, sexual tension that will make the hairs stand up on your neck in anticipation and the whole atmosphere was to crystal clear, you can absolutely picture the scenes in your mind. REVIEW: Gabriel's Redemption by Steve Umstead

Our rating: 5 of 5 stars

It’s suspense from the outset of Steve Umstead’s debut novel, and book 1 of the ‘Evan Gabriel Trilogy’, named for his main character that hooked me in. This is one of the better science fiction, action novels you’ll find out there whether indie or big market. Umstead is meticulous in establishing the back story for not only his characters but this futuristic universe while being mindful to maintain the pace and flow of his plot.

Umstead intertwines much of his character development and interaction with some jazzy futuristic technology incorporated in a way that is very believable. Those deftly written inter-character relationships in the early chapters enable the reader to understand the social, political and economic realities of this future time frame because it is based on an evolution of our modern standards. All the while you will get to know Gabriel and his past, which drives much of the suspense throughout the story.

It’s that combination of the anticipation of a action-packed collision between our hero and his antagonists, along with genuine curiosity surrounding this futuristic world that make this novel very difficult to put down. While some may argue that there are elements that are too predictable, I think they are very few but well timed and strategically placed to keep the story moving at a fast pace and in a linear fashion.

All too often a stories are lost by an author chasing and explaining far too many details in the setting or trying to incorporate too many turning points throughout the plot that a reader becomes confused or bored. In both scenarios, Gabriel’s Redemption follows a logical path of genuine suspense and story development to a fitting climax with enough surprises to make you take more than one deep breath.

Umstead carefully balances the need to educate the reader while keeping you glued to the pages, an absolute must to elevate to a great sci-fi. More importantly you have to relate or empathize with the main character to some degree. You’ll easily do that as you learn more about Evan Gabriel and his bid for redemption.

Gabriel is that fallen hero who lost everything he worked for as a special operations officer. This former elite military man must take on one more mission for the man who brought him down in order to redeem his career and restore faith in himself. Gabriel knows there is more behind the mission than he’s been told but he’s surrounded by a team he knows nothing about. With no allies, Gabriel will have to follow his instincts in order to bring himself and his team back alive.

Gabriel is flawed by the universal politics and ambitions of the power brokers in this world. He is a tool, an instrument whose race to uncover a truth will completely reshape the universe one way or another. With only a finite amount of time, he must flush out the villains nearest him and expose their masters amongst the elite. More than his own skill and intuition, Gabriel must learn who to trust others because these are monumental tasks he cannot do along.

Gabriel’s Redemption is a 'guys read'; a hard-core science fiction with plenty of gadgets and adrenaline to keep the synapses firing while you turn the pages all night long. In fact, I managed to devote twelve straight hours to reading this novel and highly recommend it to any guy who loves science fiction or military-style action because this has plenty of both. I couldn’t put it down and I can’t give it less than five stars.

They say, "Don't judge a book by its cover", but in the book world, that is not always the case. Unfortunately, if you live by that motto you will miss out on some well written books by indie and small press authors.

A Work in Progress by Larry Sheridan may not be flashy or have all the bells and whistles on the outside, but the inside is bursting with twists and turns and intrigue. My job here at The Kindle Book Review is to find kindle books that are getting great reviews and A Work in Progress definitely hits the mark. Tom will pop in every month or so with an unsolited review. Today Tom is reviewing Neiko's Five Land Adventure by A.K. Taylor ($2.99 ~ 10 ratings with a 4.3 star average).

Tom's Review:
Meet Amanda Katherine Hawk, an 18 year-old girl living in residential part of Georgia. Like other kids her age she goes to school, earns good grades, and loves video games but Amanda is not your average teen. She spends a lot of time playing with children's toys and mostly keeps to herself in order to conceal the truth of a dual life. Amanda is also known as Captain Neiko Kidd, leader of the Desert Storm Falcons and a member of a secret Indian society known as the Seven Tribes.

Neiko and her band of warriors have fought numerous battles against the evil Crackedskulls in order to protect the land and people of Howote. At the head of this enemy tribe rules Raven and his son Bloodhawk, part human, part beast and pure evil. It's this constant struggle with Neiko that drives Raven and Bloodhawk to hatch a plan to bring her down along with all of the people of the Seven Tribes.

As the plan begins to bear fruit, Neiko finds herself estranged from her family and the tribes. Now alone, she begins to unravel the plan that brought her down, the only problem is things quickly get out of control as an even greater evil enters the fray and seeks dominion over Howote and the rest of the world.

Now desperate Neiko finds some unexpected allies in her fight to save Howote and mankind. Can this new band stand against such an ancient and powerful force of evil?

This one took me back to my own teenage daydreams, where quiet time could transport me to other worlds and times. The years and responsibilities tend to weigh us down with so much that it was nice to remember what it was like to let your mind take you away on a glorious outdoors adventure.

I can certainly recommend this to younger readers as the story has some interesting characters, unique creatures and plot lines, and plenty of twists and turns. This is a book where you have to go back in time a little bit and remember that imagination is a flexible thing where every town, pet, person or place we encounter has its own fiction waiting to be explored.

That said, I didn't like some of the phrasing and I wouldn't recommend it for an adult reader but the writing is something younger readers will easily roll with and it's these readers the author tries to reach. I love, love, love it when I find a killer indie thriller, and I'm sure you do too. I've done the hard work, and now all you have to do is read this post. Without holding you in suspense for too long, let me tell you what I've found.

A couple of weeks ago I told The KBR reviewers that if they read a book that absolutely blew them away, I would post their review on our blog which I usually reserve for books with 20 or more reviews with 4.0 stars or higher. However, I highly value my reviewers opinions, so I will make an exception when they want me to share a book with you. Therefore, I'm posting a review of Gray Justice by Rachel Dove, our lovely book reviewer from across the pond, in the beautiful UK.

As a die hard James Patterson fan, Gray Justice intrigued me from the beginning.

I love the crime, gritty thriller type books and this book blew me away.

Tom Gray, ex serviceman, has a beautiful wife, toddler son Daniel, and a good life. Until a lowlife professional car thief does his usual runner from the PD, leaving his stolen car on a collision course with Gray Junior. Tom's life eroded round his ears, the car thief does less than a year.

With his family destroyed, Tom Gray calls his highly decorated buddies and puts a plan into action. Sick of the government letting people get away with their crimes and society crumbling, they have a daring, clever plan to make people wake up and listen.

I adored this book. Harsh and brutal in places, it's a total page turner. Think Law Abiding Citizen meets Alex Cross meets SAS, and you are still only scratching the surface. Gray is believable, absorbing and realistically human. With an explosive sub plot colliding with the main one, and a final twist that takes your breath away, you will not regret reading this book. I am salivating for the next installment.

Doodling by Jonathan Gould is the second book we've posted that is full of laughs, but it deserves your serious attention.

Actually, he did not so much fall off as let go. The world had been moving so quickly lately and Neville was finding it almost impossible to keep up.

Are you ready for a cyber punk novel? I bet you are. After reading the "Look Inside" edition of Michael Shean's Shadow of a Dead Star, I know I am, and I bet a couple of our reviewers would love to get their hands on this book.

I was so struck by the first paragraph, that I had to get a copy for myself.

Here's the first paragraph that hooked me in.

When the call came in over the Bureau net, Walken had been sitting in his parked car listening to the rain. On nights like this when the breath of the sound condensed the mist into silver sheets of cool, drumming water, he found his thoughts directing inward more than usual. Michael's style engaged me from the beginning so it's no wonder his reviews are so good. Shadow of a Dead Star has received 23 reviews and is carrying a 4.6 star rating. Not bad for a first time novelist

Lia Fairchild is in the house and she's packing heat! Not the shoot 'em up kind of heat, but the love, loss and friendship kind of heat, if you want to call it that. Her reviewers are saying In Search of Lucy is, "Very human and very satisfying." and "Such a heartfelt and touching story of two sisters."

Okay Sci-fi fans, The Kindle Book Review has exactly what you're looking for. We found an amazing sci-fi author who's moving at warp speed with his book, Gabriel's Redemption, the first in a three-book series.

Admittedly, I'm not much of a science fiction reader, but after reading the synopsis of Gabriel's Redemption, I'm starting to think author, Steve Umstead, might convert me.

This story is about dishonored, special-forces commander, Evan Gabriel. While finding personal and professional redemption through a multi-planet mission, Gabriel's Return sounds like a thriller meets sci-fi meets Bruce Willis epic adventure.
